Building your first piece of furniture can feel intimidating.
You may wonder whether you have the right tools, enough experience, or the skills needed to turn a stack of lumber into something useful. The truth is that every woodworker begins with a first project—and the right plan can make that first build much easier.
That is why Woodshopplans LLC, WoodshopPlans.com, and Grandpa A’s Woodshop are introducing the 250 Builds Project, a free beginner woodworking program created to help 250 people experience the satisfaction of building their own furniture.
The 250 Builds Project begins September 1, 2026.
The 250 Builds Project is designed specifically for beginner woodworkers, including people who have little or no previous furniture-building experience.
The goal is to help 250 participants successfully complete a practical piece of furniture using one of five specially selected Grandpa A’s Woodshop Apprentice Plans.
Each selected participant will choose one of the five eligible projects and receive the digital woodworking plan for that project free of charge.
Choose One of Five Beginner Projects
Participants will select one project from five eligible Apprentice-level furniture plans.
The five projects are being chosen because they are approachable for newer woodworkers and provide an opportunity to learn useful furniture-building skills without beginning with an overly complicated design.
Each eligible plan is intended to provide the information a beginner needs to prepare for and complete the project, including:
- Step-by-step building instructions
- Project diagrams
- A materials list
- A cut list
- Important dimensions
- Beginner-focused building guidance
The selected plan will be provided digitally. Participants may build only the project associated with the free plan they receive through the program.
Who Is This Project For?
The 250 Builds Project is intended for people who want to begin woodworking or gain experience building furniture.
You do not need a professional workshop, an expensive collection of machinery, or years of woodworking experience. However, participants should be prepared to read the plan carefully, work safely, gather the required materials, and complete the project themselves.
The program is especially suited for people who:
- Have never built a piece of furniture
- Have completed only a few woodworking projects
- Want to become more confident using woodworking plans
- Want to build something practical for their home
- Are ready to learn through hands-on experience

What Does the Free Plan Include?
Each selected participant will receive one eligible Apprentice Plan as a free digital download.
The plan is intended to guide the participant through the construction of the selected project. It does not include the physical materials or equipment needed to complete the build.
Participants are responsible for providing their own:
- Lumber and sheet materials
- Screws, fasteners, and other hardware
- Wood glue
- Tools
- Safety equipment
- Sandpaper
- Stain, paint, clear finish, or other finishing supplies
- Workspace
- Printing costs, when printed pages are desired
There is no charge for the eligible digital woodworking plan received through the 250 Builds Project, but participants should consider the cost of materials and supplies before choosing to participate.
Why Focus on Beginner Woodworkers?
Many people want to try woodworking but are unsure where to begin.
Online videos can provide inspiration, but they do not always give a new builder the complete dimensions, materials, diagrams, and construction sequence needed to finish a project.
A structured woodworking plan gives the builder a path to follow.
The 250 Builds Project is intended to help participants move from thinking about woodworking to actually building something. Each project offers an opportunity to practice skills such as:
- Reading a woodworking plan
- Measuring and marking lumber
- Making accurate cuts
- Drilling and fastening parts
- Checking assemblies for square
- Sanding wood properly
- Applying a finish
- Correcting small mistakes along the way
The goal is not to produce factory-perfect furniture. The goal is to help a new woodworker complete a real project, learn from the experience, and develop the confidence to build again.
Participants Provide the Materials and Tools
The free portion of the program is the eligible digital Apprentice Plan.
Woodshopplans LLC, WoodshopPlans.com, and Grandpa A’s Woodshop will not provide lumber, hardware, tools, safety equipment, finishing products, or other physical supplies.
Before beginning, participants should review the materials list and confirm that they have access to the tools, workspace, and supplies needed for their selected project.
Every participant is responsible for following proper tool instructions, wearing appropriate safety equipment, and using safe woodworking practices throughout the build.
Documenting the Building Experience
Participants may be invited to photograph their projects during construction and after completion.
Helpful photographs may include:
- Materials before construction begins
- Parts laid out for assembly
- The project during different building stages
- Joinery or assembly details
- Sanding and finishing
- The completed project
- The finished furniture in the participant’s home or workshop
With the participant’s permission, selected photographs and project stories may be featured by WoodshopPlans.com or Grandpa A’s Woodshop on their websites, blog posts, email communications, or social media accounts.
Submitting a project does not automatically guarantee that it will be featured.
A First Project Does Not Have to Be Perfect
Mistakes are part of learning woodworking.
A board may be cut slightly too short. A screw may need to be repositioned. A joint may require adjustment. A finish may look different than expected.
These experiences are not signs that the build has failed. They are part of developing practical woodworking skills.
The most important accomplishment is completing the project safely and learning enough to approach the next build with greater confidence.
